Don’t miss this rare encounter.
Originally found between Angola and Namibia, the Southern White Rhinoceros is now a protected species.
Casela is home to two Southern White Rhinoceroses: Ella and Benji. At fifteen and seven months old, respectively, Ella and Benji were rescued as orphans from an anti-poaching centre in South Africa. A sheep was brought in as their guide to teach them to graze on grass and forage in bushes. Since they arrived in Mauritius in 2014, they have been enjoying peaceful days at Casela with their beloved caretaker, Rolo. Visitors can feed and interact with them as they are accustomed to humans.
Despite its name, the White Rhinoceros doesn’t differ in skin colour from the Black Rhinoceros; they’re both grey! What sets them apart are their lips: the Black Rhinoceros has thin, pointed lips, whereas the White Rhinoceros has broad, square lips.
