Meet Raphael, Rocky, and George

The iconic giant aldabras of Casela

About the Aldabra Giant Tortoise

Meet the world’s largest tortoise! Males can weigh up to 300 kg, while females reach about 160 kg, with a size of up to 125 cm.

The giants of Aldabra

Meet our giant tortoises, Raphael, Rocky, and George! You’ll recognise the centenarian of the group, Georges, by the distinctive notch on his shell. As for Rocky and Raphael, they are practically cousins, having been raised by the same family before being brought to Casela. Long thought to be a male, Raphael gave us all quite a surprise when joining the park… it’s actually a female!

A remarkable creature!

Contrary to popular belief, tortoises have a unified body and shell. Despite the shell’s tough exterior, it’s intricately linked to their nervous system. That’s why you really shouldn’t sit on them! These giant tortoises have many other remarkable features: besides being able to live over a century, they can absorb water through their nostrils and rectum, allowing them to drink from even the tiniest puddles. Mostly herbivores, their long extended necks help them reach high foliage.
